Follow Closed Position
1. Stand facing your partner, about six inches apart.
2. Slightly cup your right hand so that your fingers bend at your top two knuckles.
3. Place your right hand in Lead’s left hand so that your hand hangs by your fingers draped over Lead’s index finger. 4. Slightly press your palms together.
5. Do not have too much or too little tension in your wrist and arm or it will not be possible for Lead to move your arm. If Lead pushes on your hand, your arm and body should move together, keeping the distance between you and your partner the same. 6. Lift your left hand and place it on the top or back of Lead’s right shoulder. Ideally it should be on the top corner almost touching the back of his arm. There should be some tension, but make sure you do not obstruct Lead’s movement.
7. Your body and this positioning of your arms are sometimes collectively referred to as a frame. Your frame should be upright and firm but not stiff.
8. Smile at your partner!
WARNING: Maintain pressure throughout the dance, but do not lean on Lead. Follow should support his or her own weight. Failure to do so may cause injury.
