Selecting a Wardrobe

Shoe Selection

·         Salsa dance shoes are light in weight and have either suede or smooth leather soles.  The performance of the shoe depends on the sole, and suede or leather will offer the correct degree of traction on a wooden floor.

·         Appropriate shoe height depends on gender: flats for men and 1-2 inch heels for women.

·         Women’s shoes made specifically for Latin dancing have a higher, slimmer heel and a more flexible sole than those intended for standard ballroom dancing.

·         Some women prefer closed-toed shoes to protect their toes.

WARNING: Beware of poorly constructed shoes with sharp edges near your ankles and any interior seams that will irritate your foot.

Clothing Selection

·         Wear clothing that shows your body’s line so that you may observe your alignment.

·         Eliminate any men’s jackets that are not designed for dancing because they will not sit correctly on the shoulders.

·         Men’s trousers should fit correctly so that the leg line may be seen.

·         Women’s skirts should be made of Lycra and be knee length or shorter to show the leg line.
